Mental Construal and the Emergence of Assimilation and Contrast Effects: The Inclusion/Exclusion Model
نویسنده
چکیده
The inclusion/exclusion model provides an integrative framework for conceptualizing the emergence of assimilation and contrast effects in evaluative judgment. The model assumes that feature-based evaluative judgments require a mental representation of the object of judgment (target) and of a standard to which the target is compared. Both representations are context-sensitive and based on the information that is most accessible at the time. The way in which accessible information influences the judgment depends on how it is used. Information that is used in forming a representation of the target results in assimilation effects; information that is used in forming a representation of the standard results in contrast effects. How information is used depends on (i) individuals’ beliefs about whether the information was brought to mind by some irrelevant influence, (ii) the information’s perceived representativeness for the target, and (iii) conversational norms that influence the perceived appropriateness of information use. We summarize the core assumptions of the inclusion/exclusion model, review empirical evidence bearing on it, and highlight its integrative nature. Assimilation and Contrast 4

The effect of global versus local processing styles on assimilation versus contrast in social judgment.
The authors propose a global/local processing style model (GLOMO) for assimilation and contrast effects in social judgment. GLOMO is based on Schwarz and Bless' (1992, 2007) inclusion-exclusion model, which suggests that when information is included into a category, assimilation occurs, whereas when information is excluded from a category, contrast occurs. According to GLOMO, inclusion versus e...
متن کاملEffect of Solar Ultraviolet-B plus End of Day Light and Its Exclusion on Growth Performance and Dry Weight Accumulation of Two Sweet Potato Cultivars (Ipomoea batatas L.) on Different Altitudes
UV-B radiation and EOD light (EOD) quality has both signaling and damaging effects based on the dosage and time of exposure. At highland areas UV-B decreases crop productivity and also light quality increase at high elevation area but EOD light quality effect was not researched based on altitude. Therefore, in the present study a field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of UV-B...
متن کاملEffects of LED Light on Seed Emergence and Seedling Quality of Four Bedding Flowers
Recently much attention has been paid by horticulturists to light-emitting diodes as a new source of economical and spectral-selective light. The reason is mainly coming from their versatility in handling and mounting, long working time, wattage use efficiency and lower heat production. In this study we examined their potential in promoting seed germination and producing quality flower seedling...
متن کاملInclusion-exclusion of positive and negative past selves: mood congruence as information.
The current research challenges the widespread truism that recalling a positive self necessarily increases self-esteem, whereas recalling a negative self necessarily decreases self-esteem. Four experiments demonstrate that chronically happy people show a relative increase in self-esteem by recalling either a positive or a negative self. Chronically sad people, however, show a relative decrease ...
متن کاملEnhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
